Examples of present projects

  • Development of methods for clonal propagation of conifers by somatic embryogenesis (SE). At present nordmanns fir (Abies nordmanniana) and sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) are our model species, but we are involved in projects on other conifer- and angiosperm species as well.
  • Ash die back – methods for in vitro propagation of selected individuals of European common ash (Fraxinus excelsior), which are under serious threat by a novel disease, ash die back.  
  • Climate adaption of trees – an investigation of the epigenetic memory in nordmanns fir.
  • Clonal field trials of nordmanns fir for selection of elite trees for the Danish Christmas tree industry.
  • Development of automated methods for cost efficient large scale production of plants.
  • The SE systems in conifers are used for development of advanced tissue culture methods such as protoplast cultures, in vitro fertilisation (IVF), tracheary elements, reprogramming/rejuvenation of mature tissue, and genetic transformation of conifers.
  • Seidenfaden’s orchids: In vitro propagation and cryo preservation of endangered orchids from South East Asia.
  • Danish orchids: Propagation and preservation of endangered Danish orchids.

  • Growth chambers with control of light, temperature and relative humidity.


The facilities at the Tissue Culture Laboratory are accessible to all scientists and students at IGN, however only after an individual introduction by the laboratory technicians. Funding for students projects including training has to be provided by the supervisor.
